Compass
Overview
Compass is a window on organizational cybersecurity. The best cybersecurity is the one you don’t worry about. However, being worry-free creates another problem: how to justify the spending and staff that are keeping your organization safe. How do we show all the great work that is happening to ensure the peace? Compass was envisioned to be readable to a general audience with additional detailed layers for the security team that would be improving the security measures.
Challenge
Starting at NuHarbor Security with Compass was a bit like skydiving for the first time. There was a broad concept of what “Compass” could be from executive sponsors and a brand new product owner. And that’s it. No other designers. No engineers. No existing platform that was addressing the same issue. In other words, it was time to jump and make the parachute along the way.

Wireframes, Interactive Prototypes, Design System, Information Architecture, Research Reports
Approach
User Research
For a foundation, I put together a user needs analysis so that we we could see what was missing for our prospective customers. We probed about what their current day-to-day was like, what kept them up at night, what regular irritations came up about their progress and communication. Based on that information, I analyzed the results to see what the common affinities were. Before a single pixel of a single wireframe, we talked about all the ways we could address these issues. No bad ideas, no checking for feasibility - just making sure everyone was heard and involved. We looked at all the many ways we could potentially help and then cut half of it. And then again, cut half of it. And then once more until we got to a single manageable set of concepts that would be the starting toolkit for our customers.

Design System
There was no established design language therefore all of that had to be created. Initially because we were going to be working with Amazon identity authentication, I chose the Amplify UI as a jumping off point. Adapting from existing company presentation decks and past marketing materials, I made the first real brand guidelines in NuHarbor Security’s company history.
Wireframes
I was the sole designer at the beginning of the project so early wireframes were very blocky in terms of just getting the right content to the right spots. I came up with a cadence of meetings where I could consult with subject matter experts on what data points were available and which would be more important to show. Then I had invited some of the more aesthetically minded members of the company to a meeting to check if the designs were still maintaining a degree of beauty and delight. The team proceeded square by square to get each piece right with higher fidelity
